Remaining at Home Takes Some Planning

Posted by Nina Whitehurst | May 08, 2018 | 0 Comments

Staying out of a facility in the senior years, needs careful consideration.

More people can live at home rather than a facility for longer than ever before.  However, seniors need to make the appropriate plans, according to a doctor in a recent article in The Roanoke Times "Staying at home as we age."

Before deciding to stay at home, it is important to have a discussion with your doctor about your health and future prospects. Listen to what the doctor has to say, so you can make an appropriate decision about what is best for you. After you have done that, you need to get your legal affairs in order. It is important to have your estate plan and end-of-life care plans done, while you are still able to make them.

Go to an estate planning attorney to discuss your options. Finally, make sure your home is a safe place for an elderly person to live in. There are people who specialize in assessing the suitability of homes for the elderly.

An elder law attorney can also advise you in the steps necessary to increase your chances of successfully remaining in your home and out of a facility.
